Pi-hole Anywhere: Surf Ad-Free & Private

This setup is more geeky than just setting up a Pi-hole at home, but it is quite doable with some knowledge of web servers and networking.

Saying Ding Liren and Chess Names Correctly

It is perfectly understandable why chess names are a battlefield of pronunciation. If you have ever wondered how to say Ding Liren correctly or struggled with Slavic surnames, you are not alone. Learning a foreign language is a massive undertaking, and adapting your vocal muscles to the unique sounds of another culture is far from easy. There is absolutely no shame in making a mistake or defaulting to a westernized version of a name. However, it only becomes a shame when someone is too stubborn to listen, or worse, bullies someone else for using a different pronunciation—especially when that person might actually be the one getting it right.

Chess vs Xiangqi: Physics vs Puzzles

To a Western Chess player, Chinese Chess (Xiangqi) rules feel like a fever dream: perpetual checking is illegal, the leader is trapped in a box, and pieces jump over each other to capture. Conversely, a Xiangqi player looks at Western Chess and finds it absurd that a trapped King can swindle a draw through stalemate or that a tiny Pawn can magically transform into a powerful Queen. Even though these rules seem odd to outsiders, they were designed to make the games more fun and playable. As games, they are equally beautiful. I personally enjoy both games immensely.  To fully appreciate the beauty of the games, it's important to understand the reasons behind the rules. If you look deeper, you realize that the oddities of Xiangqi almost always have a grounded historical context and—sorry chess players—chess is the odd one in reality.

The Chess Origin: Victorian Lies Exposed

The current consensus on the history of chess is taught as a settled fact: the game originated in India as early as the 6th century. According to this narrative, it was known as Chaturanga and was so popular that it was played at royal parties and military courts. It supposedly represented the four divisions of the Indian army and served as the direct ancestor to every version of chess played today. Except this entire timeline is likely wrong.

Wax vs Rubber Toilet Seal: The Real Winner

Choosing the right toilet seal can mean the difference between a fresh bathroom and a mysterious “something died in the pipes” smell. Rubber seals are marketed as the modern, mess-free solution, but the traditional wax ring still earns its reputation for reliability thanks to one simple advantage: physics.

Broker IV Glitch: The Precision Option Calculator

If you trade options, have you ever noticed your broker’s IV looks wrong on a Friday? For example, just now, when I looked at the number in the Robinhood App, I knew something was definitely wrong. As it turned out, many Apps use calendar days, ignoring the fact that markets are closed on weekends, to calculate options. This "Time Inflation" creates a massive error in your Greeks. The numbers are still wrong on other days, just not as obvious.

White Powder On Baseboard: A Tale of Two AIs

Maintaining a home often feels like being a detective where the crime scene keeps resetting. Recently, I found myself staring at a mysterious white powder appearing along my baseboard. It's in a colder room facing an exterior wall. I’d wipe it off, and like clockwork, it would return.

The Expensive iDiot Trap: Your Pro Is Wrong

Calling a "Pro" Should Not Be Your Default Response to A Problem

That reflex has probably cost people way more money than necessary.

Who is Really Breaking Your Car?

The Mystery of the Constant Repair Bill

Several years ago, I began noticing a pattern in a car enthusiast group. People were constantly complaining about breakdowns—repairs one after another, sometimes multiple times a year. The bills ranged from hundreds to thousands of dollars, and in some cases climbed close to $10,000.

What made this truly puzzling was that many of these owners were driving cars widely considered to be reliable. That raised a simple but uncomfortable question: What is actually going on?

Car Batteries Don’t Die. They’re Killed.

The Car Battery Secret: Why the Dealer’s "Internal Memo" Is Worth Exactly Nothing

Most people treat car batteries like disposable light bulbs: use them until they die, complain loudly, then buy another one. The truth is far more irritating — most car batteries don’t die naturally. They are slowly and predictably killed years before their time.

Today, I’ll explain why manually charging your car battery year-round is one of the simplest ways to massively extend its life. I’ll also share a story about a dealership that tried to dodge a valid warranty claim using a phrase corporations love when they run out of arguments: "internal memo."

Dealer Mishaps: An Audi Service Nightmare

I am sure most people have a crazy dealership story, but mine is going to surprise you. This is one surprise after another, so stay until the end—you won't be disappointed. It was the end of 2023, and my 2019 Audi Q7 had just two months of warranty left. I ran an OBD11 scan and found a few codes, including an intermittent transmission issue and a static code for a glass breakage sensor. I took it in for a final check, and that is where the nightmare began.

CO Monitoring: Home Safety Driven By Data

Why this post exists

Homeowners are often told that any cracked heat exchanger is an immediate life-safety emergency that requires instant furnace replacement. This message is usually delivered with alarming language, unclear camera images, and very little explanation of how furnaces actually work.

This article is not arguing that cracked heat exchangers are harmless or should be ignored. Instead, it explains why continuous carbon monoxide (CO) monitoring can be a more practical, objective, cost-effective and homeowner-friendly safety strategy than routine, speculative heat-exchanger inspections — especially in modern homes with modern furnaces. The goal is simple: focus on real risk, not fear.

Why The Term Lunar New Year Is Anti-Science

You didn’t misread the title — it’s worse than you think.

Calling this holiday “Lunar New Year” is not a harmless linguistic shortcut. It is not a neutral umbrella term. It is a scientifically incorrect label that survives only because correcting it would be socially inconvenient.

You can respect cultures without lying about how their calendars work. The fact that this needs to be said at all is already a bad sign.

PhD Redneck Fix: Sump & Basement Odor

The "Old House" Assumption

For 15 years, I lived with a persistent, localized odor in my basement. I have a very sensitive nose and often smell things that others can't, so I simply chalked it up to "old house smell"—that stagnant, basement-level funk you just accept as part of the architecture. However, this winter, I started working from home in my office on the top floor, and the data points began to shift. I noticed a new, intolerable smell that peaked around 9:00 AM—roughly 2 to 3 hours after the furnace kicked on. Curiously, the smell would seem to vanish about 30 minutes later, perhaps because the "slug" of gas had cleared, or perhaps because I simply got used to it.

Fix Django TemplateSyntaxError

Our infrastructure uses **Django** alongside **nginx**. We utilize the powerful tool **GoAccess** to parse nginx logs and convert them into beautiful, comprehensive HTML reports (stay tuned for a dedicated blog post on that setup!).

However, a recent update to GoAccess introduced strings like {{#from}} directly into its generated HTML output. Since these closely resemble **Django's template variable syntax** ({{ variable }}), attempting to render the file with Django's standard render() function triggers a fatal:

Real Reason HFCS is Bad: Not What You Think

Why Public Health Experts and Internet Summaries Miss the Point

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) has been the boogeyman of the modern diet for decades. But if you think its dangers are purely rooted in its molecular structure, you're only seeing half the picture. The true reason it has fueled the obesity crisis is less about chemistry and more about cold, hard business.

This post first covers what you usually hear about HFCS, then uses simple logic to prove why that common knowledge is flawed, before revealing the core industrial truth.

Modify radio antenna plug to fit a head unit

In 2024, I decided to give my 2006 Volvo XC90 (currently pushing 262k miles!) a much-needed audio system upgrade. My goal was to install a modern Android head unit to gain features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and dedicated inputs for a backup camera and dashcam.

The main installation went smoothly, with one small exception: the radio antenna connection.

The head unit didn't come with a radio antenna. I purchased this antenna adapter from Amazon. But there was a problem. The head unit's chassis didn't have enough clearance to accept the antenna plug, so a modification was necessary.

Pi-hole: Avoid These 2 Default Settings

Pi-hole is a powerful network-level ad blocker that acts as a "sinkhole"—a black hole for advertisements and trackers. Instead of letting those ads reach your devices, the Pi-hole swallows them whole, protecting every phone, laptop, and smart TV in your house. It is a fantastic tool, and there is an excellent hardware and installation tutorial over at the official Raspberry Pi site that covers the "how-to" perfectly.

However, do not finish your setup until you read this. Most tutorials give "textbook" advice that works in a lab but fails in a family home. If you follow the default settings in most guides, you will very likely find yourself unable to use the internet at all. The software will be running and the lights will be on, but your devices will be stranded. Make sure to come back to this post after you've followed the basic install steps to fix these two traps.

Human VS AI: who wins on what?

I’ll admit it: I’m late to the party. While some have been living in the AI world for years, I only started a few months ago. I began with ChatGPT, but lately, I’ve found myself almost exclusively using the free tier of Gemini.

I have used AI for a lot more than just web development; we’ve discussed a vast range of topics including nutritional science, DIY projects, and the ethics of technology. After a few months of these wide-ranging discussions, I’ve realized that while AI is a powerhouse for data, it hits a very specific wall when it comes to the way humans actually think. Here are the 6 pillars of what AI can and cannot do well.

Custom Django Template Filters: Range & HTML

Custom Django template filters: Range & HTML

One common hurdle for developers is that the Django template system typically doesn't allow Python native functions (like range(), len(), or complex regex) directly within the HTML. This is by design to keep logic separate from presentation, but it can feel restrictive when you need simple functionality.

Custom template filters are the fastest way to bridge this gap. They allow you to bring that missing Python power into your templates without cluttering your views. Filters are especially useful because they keep views thin while enabling reusable presentation logic directly where it belongs.

Summer Deception: My Radon Safety Story

Fifteen years ago, I bought my first home. Like most buyers, I relied on the professional home inspection, which included a radon test. It was summer, and the results came back at 2 pCi/L—well under the EPA action limit. I was told the house was safe, and for most people, that would have been the end of the story.

Grounding vs Bonding: Essential Truth You Miss

I decided to write this guide for two reasons. First, the level of misunderstanding regarding electrical safety is massive. This isn’t necessarily your fault; the word grounding itself is a historical misnomer. Most people misunderstand it, and surprisingly, many licensed electricians do too. Second, grounding is vital—do it right, and it saves lives; get it wrong, and it can kill.

Always Free Powerful Cloud Service in 2026

In the world of cloud infrastructure, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is often considered the "baby" of the family. While Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform established their dominance a full decade earlier, OCI’s modern Gen 2 infrastructure didn't truly enter the ring until 2016. However, while it may be the underdog in age, it has become a undisputed giant in its "Always Free" offerings.
