In 2024, I decided to give my 2006 Volvo XC90 (currently pushing 262k miles!) a much-needed audio system upgrade. My goal was to install a modern Android head unit to gain features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and dedicated inputs for a backup camera and dashcam.
The main installation went smoothly, with one small exception: the radio antenna connection.
The head unit didn't come with a radio antenna. I purchased this antenna adapter from Amazon. But there was a problem. The head unit's chassis didn't have enough clearance to accept the antenna plug, so a modification was necessary.
The Problem: Adapter Clearance
Here is the antenna adapter when it arrived. Note the straight plastic housing, which prevented the plug from seating flush inside the head unit.
The DIY Solution: Bending the Connector
To gain the necessary clearance, the straight plastic housing needs to be removed, and the connector needs to be angled.
First, carefully remove the external plastic plug housing to expose the metal connector. The exposed connector looks like this:

Next, use a piece of large heat-shrink tubing to cover the exposed connection. This will serve as the new, flexible housing.
After sliding the heat shrink over the plug, gently bend the exposed metal connector to a 90-degree angle. Then, apply heat to the tubing. The finished, right-angle plug looks like this:

The modified, angled plug should now fit perfectly into the back of your head unit, solving the clearance issue! Enjoy your new system features!
